Try Something New Tuesday: Knitting With DPNs

Okay, I am a little bit of a liar. I actually started this project last Tuesday when I had already posted my letter to the editor, but I figure it still counts. Right?

Anyway, moving on to knitting with DPNs. When I first heard the term DPNs I thought, “What is this crazy code language these amazing knitters are speaking?”. I wanted to be in with the cool kids so I quickly Googled the term and discovered it stood for double-pointed needles – those cute little needles used to make socks and the like.

I did not intend to use DPNs for a long while, I still felt that my knitting skills were quite basic and I wasn’t crafty enough to handle working with four needles at a time. Then the other day I found myself walking through the isles of my local craft store and decided I should at least give it a go, so I picked out this pattern for thigh highs and chose some cosy wool and went on my way.

It turns out it is not as difficult as I thought! I actually feel like a bit of a pro using all four needles at once, like one of the cool kids. I certainly love throwing the term DPNs around. When people ask me what I am doing I say, “Oh, just knitting with DPNs” – like it’s nothing. You’re rolling your eyes now aren’t you?

Anyway, it is still early days. After all I have about, I don’t know, nearly a whole thigh high and then another thigh high to go and I may encounter some problems when it comes to decreasing. We’ll see! For now I am going to bask in my DPN knitting awesomeness!
